Flytying Reports

2007 Flytying Report Archive
2006 Flytying Report Archive

03-29-08 - Joe Calcavecchia taught the last tying class for the 2008 winter season today. If you have ever participated in one of Joe's classes you already know that he is an excellent fly tier and instructor. He is a professional fly tier and is responsible for keeping the fly bins of many fly shops full of striper flies. His amiable character and cheerful nature combined with his superior tying skills make his classes unforgettable.
If you want to be in his class in 2009 make sure to get your name on the list early because Joe's class fills up quickly.

03-22-08 - Todays fly tying jamboree was instructed by Captain David Beattie. David taught a full class how to tie bluefin tuna flies that he has used successfully to fool and land several bluefin with. Dave has been flyfishing for most of his life. As a boy he was what he refers to as a "flyshop rat" hanging around Dick Surrett's fly shop in Conway New Hampshire. In college he hung out at Eddies Flies in Bangor where he bought material to tie flies for his fraternity brothers to earn money for beer. Now he gets his beer money guiding for stripers and blues. If you twist his arm you might be able to talk him into taking you out for sharks or bluefin tuna on the fly.

03-15-08 - Young Tom was in the instructors seat again today. Tom has developed into an excellent fly tier for someone his age and everyone who attended his classes this year expressed to me how much they enjoy tying with him. He has good teaching skills and a wit that keeps everyone laughing. Tom has tied thousands of flies for our shop.  He taught todays class to tie three different sculpin patterns.

03-08-08 - Today's instructor was Jeff Faulkner and he taught a crowded room how tie 3 patterns that he has done well with fishing for striped bass. If you fish the Maine coast south of Portland, keep your eye out for a guy chucking a mile of line with a spey rod, that could be Jeff.  Jeff also instructed the January 26th class.

03-01-08 - Today Tom Gagnon instructed his second class of the winter. In his last class he taught students to tie emergers. Today he taught the class how to tie dry flies.

02-23-08 - Jeff Barnum instructed today's fly tying class. You may have seen Jeff in the July 2007 edition of Saltwater Fly Fishing magazine where Jerry Gibbs profiled his lobster fly pattern. It is one of the coolest and most realistic bugs that we've ever seen and that is what he taught today's class to tie.

02-16-08 - Tom Gagnon was the instructor for today's fly tying class. Most of you have probably heard him referred to as Young Tom. He has been working at our fly shop for several years and has been production tying for us for almost as long. Young Tom excelled at fly tying at an early age and continues to design flies that are not only creative, they catch fish.

02-09-08 - Our instructor for today's tying class was Rick Sharp. Rick guides saltwater anglers out of the Ipswich area. He has tied flies professionally and is responsible for inventing one of the hottest striper patterns in the northeast that continues to fool bass year after year. Rick originally called this fly the Bunny Deceiver, but the local striper fishermen that frequent our fly shop renamed it the Secret Weapon years ago after fooling many selective stripers with it when no other fly would work. You can see some more of Rick's flies in the book Inshore Flies by Schollmeyer and Leeson.

02-02-08 - Travis Johnson was the instructor for today's tying class. Travis is well known locally for his prowess at catching large stripers at night from many of the bridges that span the Piscataqua River and also for his tenacious advocacy for the freshwater fisheries of Maine and New Hampshire.

He taught today's class four rather simple patterns that have stood the test of time with their effectiveness for catching rainbows, brook trout and landlock salmon in New England.

01-26-08 - Maine Guide Jeff Faulkner was today's instructor. Jeff is a very accomplished fly tyer who has a keen eye for detail. He has tied thousands of flies for our shop and has taught classes here for many years. One of Jeff's many fishing passions is to chase Great Lakes Steelhead and brown trout and today he taught students to tie patterns for that fishery.

01-19-08 - Our own Tom Cormier was today's featured tier. He has been tying flies for most of his life and is one of the most creative fly tyers that we know. Tom taught today's class how to tie two of his most successful patterns from the 2007 striper season. The first was a Chernobyl Crab and the second was a Guitar Minnow.

01-12-08 - Peter Smith was our featured tyer in today's jamboree. Peter is a local production tier who ties more flies in one year than most tiers will tie in their lifetime.  He is responsible for keeping the fly boxes of some of the most famous Florida Keys guides full. Peter taught today's class how to tie 3 different tarpon flies. Everyone came away from his class with new knowledge of time saving, practical, and ingenious tying techniques that they will be able to use with many different styles of flies.

01-05-08 - Captain Eric Wallace was our featured tier / instructor today.  Eric spends his summers guiding for striped bass in the Casco Bay area of Maine and his winters guiding in the Florida Keys for tarpon, permit, bonefish, barracuda, and snook.  He is known locally for his prowess when guiding anglers on the flats of Maine for stripers. Today Eric taught a full class how to tie two of his favorite and most successful striper flies for the flats.
